Toby Perkins, MP for Chesterfield, said: “Prime Minister Andy Burnham yesterday gave an emotional and evocative speech to Labour Party Conference, that showed that he shares the frustration with our politics that so many have expressed in recent years.

“He demonstrated that he will remain faithful to the manifesto Labour was elected on, fulfilling the pledge to retain the triple lock on pensions in this parliament, and not to re-open the question of Brexit in this parliament, whilst setting out an ambition to tackle some of the key issues facing our country.

“By signalling a route towards a National Care Service, to re-setting our relationship with Europe and winning back control on issues like buses and water, he laid out a path towards what a second term government would seek to deliver to widespread acclaim.”

The Prime Minister also announced a reform of the right to buy and the biggest long-term investment in social housing – a new era of council housebuilding – and greater public control over energy through Great British Grid to speed up grid connections for businesses and drive down energy bills. He committed to taking on youth unemployment, so that all young people have access to opportunity.
