Toby: So, the sport that’s been sweeping the nation, padel tennis, has arrived here in Chesterfield, at Queen’s Park. I’m here with Jack, the Manager down here at the Atmos Padel station here in Chesterfield. We have got the team from the Office down to have a bit of a go and find out how it’s going but, from your perspective, how is it all going these first few weeks?
Jack: Yeah, it’s been absolutely brilliant. Love seeing people down here on court. It’s been really, really good fun. Had lots of people coming in for different socials, coaching sessions and it’s just great to see the local Chesterfield community coming down and enjoying padel.
Toby: I mean, who do you think this is most suitable for? Is it a young man’s game or can anyone try?
Jack: Anyone. Absolutely anyone. We are hoping to get some children’s sessions in. We’ve got over 50’s intros at the moment. Absolutely anyone can play. There’re no restrictions.
Toby: I mean, in terms of the sport, why do you think it’s been so popular? It seems to have just swept the nation, really.
Jack: Yeah. I think the social side of it is so good. It’s accessible to play. Get some friends down. Anyone can play, as I said and yeah, the social side is really, really good. It’s just great fun.
Toby: Great. Well, we are going to put to the test the idea that anyone can play it now with me and the Office Staff having a bit of a go but, I mean, if people want to start, do they just turn up? How can they get in touch with you?
Jack: They can get in touch with us through, we have got our Instagram page and then to find any of our bookings on the Playtomic app. You can find everything that we offer there, in terms of intro sessions. Just booking your own court or any beginner pathways that you want to get on to.
Toby: So, Jack, I’m sweaty but otherwise undiminished and victorious on the court. That’s always good but we’ve all really enjoyed that and it’s great to hear also that you are doing everything you can to make this accessible. How much are people looking at if they want to come up and have a go?
Jack: Yeah, thanks for coming down, it was great watching you. If people want to come and give it a go. Weekdays, in the daytime it’s £20 in total. £5 per person. Evenings, which is our peak time, £32 in total and then all day, weekends, it’s £28 in total.
Toby: So, that’s between the four people for a court and basically, it’s better as a doubles sport, is it?
Jack: Yeah.
Toby: Well, we really enjoyed it and, you know, as kind of virgins to the game, we managed to get the hang of it pretty quickly, so long as we edit out the bad shots and it should convince people. So, thanks very much for having us and it’s really great to be down here.
