I met with Inspector Carter today to discuss an incident that took place in Chesterfield town centre over the weekend, as well as wider concerns about antisocial behaviour. I have also spoken to witnesses and will be discussing the situation with town centre businesses later today.
The police have told me that the majority of those involved were not from Chesterfield but had travelled to the town as part of an organised meet-up involving young people from Worksop and other parts of Nottinghamshire. One arrest was made, and officers are now working to identify others involved, reviewing CCTV footage and social media for evidence of criminal behaviour.
Where those responsible are identified, the police will take appropriate action, including visits to their homes and engagement with parents and warnings issued. If any evidence emerged that suggested criminal offences had been committed, further action may involve the Youth Justice Team and, where appropriate, criminal charges, although none are planned at this stage.
Police have also increased patrols in the town centre to provide reassurance, deter further incidents and ensure that people can feel safe when visiting Chesterfield.
I understand the concern caused by this incident. However, sustained work by the police, the council and other partners has contributed to a significant reduction in reports of youth antisocial behaviour in the town centre. It is important that we do not allow the progress that has been made to be undermined.
It is important the town maintains a firm and sensible approach to tackling ASB, with police provided with the powers and resources they need, and ensuring that parents, schools, youth services and local agencies work together to prevent problems escalating in the first place.
I hope these incidents prove to be isolated, perhaps linked in part to the school holidays. But if they become a recurring problem, I will continue working closely with the police and other local partners to ensure that stronger action is taken where necessary.
Everyone should be able to visit, work and enjoy themselves in Chesterfield town centre without being intimidated or subjected to antisocial behaviour. We have successfully tackled these problems before, and we will continue to take them seriously.
