As part of Armed Forces Week, Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins attended a Help for Heroes reception in Parliament, which saw veterans, charities and parliamentarians came together to discuss the support available to those who have served in the Armed Forces.
Toby said, “Armed Forces Week is an opportunity not only to thank those who have served our country, but to ensure that gratitude is matched by action. Veterans who have suffered injury, illness or mental health problems following their service should not face unnecessary barriers when seeking help. Fair support for veterans must be a national priority”.
The reception marked the launch of Help for Heroes’ new plan of action, which sets out changes the charity believes are needed to ensure veterans and their families receive the support they deserve. Discussions focused on improving the medical discharge process, removing barriers to financial support and ensuring veterans are not left fighting the system after leaving service. MPs heard directly from veterans about the challenges many continue to face, including navigating complex benefits processes, securing compensation, and accessing long-term support for service-related injuries and conditions.
Help for Heroes is currently campaigning for reforms to the way financial support and compensation are provided to veterans. The charity argues that compensation payments should not disadvantage veterans when claiming benefits, that amputees should not be subjected to repeated reassessments and that those living with chronic pain caused by service should receive fair recognition and support.
Toby added, “It was important to hear directly from veterans about their experiences. Too many are still having to fight for the help they need, whether that’s through repeated assessments, difficulties accessing benefits or delays in receiving support. The commitment shown by our service personnel does not end when they leave the Armed Forces, and neither should our commitment to them. Whether in Chesterfield or across the country, veterans deserve a system that treats them fairly and gives them the support they have earned through their service.”
