The Department for Education’s announcement that the Rother Ward in Chesterfield has been selected for a new Best Start Family Hubs has been described as a “major boost for local families” by local MP, Toby Perkins.

The initiative forms part of a nationwide programme that will see over 200 hubs open this week, including sites across the East Midlands. In Derbyshire, Chesterfield has been selected alongside Erewash to host new services designed to support families from pregnancy through to early childhood.

Responding to the news, Toby Perkins said, “This is a hugely positive step for Chesterfield and I am delighted that our community has been chosen to benefit from a new Best Start Family Hub. This will be a major boost for local families, who like many across the country are facing real pressures with the cost of living, access to SEND and other issues. This investment will provide vital, practical support where it is needed most.”

The hubs will bring together a wide range of services under one roof, including parenting advice, infant feeding support, SEND guidance, and access to health professionals. Families will also be able to benefit from free sessions such as stay-and-play activities, helping to reduce costs while supporting children’s development.

Backed by more than £900 million in government funding, the programme aims to revitalise family services and build on the legacy of Sure Start by delivering more joined-up, accessible support in local communities.

The government is also making a new commitment to deliver up to 2,000 satellite locations by the end of 2028 – based in health centres, leisure centres, libraries and churches – so families experience seamless support in the places they already go.

Mr Perkins added, “Ensuring that every child gets the best possible start in life is a priority of this Government. These hubs will make a real difference by providing early support, improving school readiness, and helping parents navigate challenges without having to turn to costly private services.”
