Could it be that Spring is in the air? Here’s my latest update on what I’ve been doing down here in Parliament and back in the constituency.
I start with the sad news that Cllr Steve Lismore, the Borough Councillor for Staveley North Ward has passed away. Steve was not only a Borough Councillor and Cabinet Member on Chesterfield Borough Council but previously a Derbyshire County Councillor and did a tremendous amount to help local charities and communities in Staveley, Whittington and beyond.
I attended the Parliamentary Apprenticeship Fair for the APPG on Apprenticeships where we had a number of different businesses showing off their apprenticeship offer and an opportunity to meet some young apprentices.
I attended a drop-in help by the RSPCA talking about what they’re doing to improve animal welfare, and I hosted a dinner for the Industry and Parliament Trust as part of National Apprenticeship Week and I also had an opportunity to raise a Prime Minister’s Question asking Keir Starmer about the National Apprenticeship Week.
I visited the National Holocaust Museum in Newark, along with young people from Inkersall Spencer Academy in Staveley.
I met with the Leadership at Poolsbrook Primary School where we were talking about the particular challenges and pressures facing Poolsbrook Primary School and the great progress that the school has made and I also went to Duckmanton Primary School to hear about their programme introducing the new breakfast club and Duckmanton Primary.
Returning to the apprenticeships theme, I had the opportunity to visit Sheffield Forgemasters and meet young apprentices there and learn about the work that company is doing to bring the next generation of people through in the company and I went to the Hope Cement Factory to learn about the work that they’re doing there to decarbonise cement production, one of the most energy intensive forms of construction we have in the UK.
I met with managers from Vertu at both their Skoda and Toyota dealerships talking about the particular pressures on electric vehicles sales and I met with National Grid to talk about what they’re doing to modernise the grid in Chesterfield and make sure we are able to help businesses decarbonise by getting access to the grid.
Thanks so much for watching. See you next week.
