The UK is a nation of pet lovers. We have a particular affinity with their pets and truly see them not just as animals, but as part of the family. We have a lovely cat called Billy and he means the world to us. Losing a pet is a family bereavement for many families.  However, having a pet can be expensive and so it is important that owners can trust their local vet and understand the costs involved in caring for their animals.

That’s why I welcome the government’s announcement of the biggest reforms to the veterinary sector in over sixty years, which will make vet services clearer, fairer and easier to navigate for families here in Chesterfield and across Derbyshire.

Too many pet owners have faced unexpected bills or struggled to compare prices. The Competition and Markets Authority has found that vet fees have risen at nearly twice the rate of inflation, potentially costing households up to £1 billion over five years. These reforms directly address that problem.

Under the new proposals, vet practices will be required to publish clear price lists for common treatments, helping Chesterfield pet owners shop around and make informed decisions. Practices will also have to be transparent about who owns them, so people know whether they are dealing with an independent local surgery or a large corporate chain.

A new licensing system will bring vet practices into line with other healthcare services, improving standards and giving owners greater confidence in the care their pets receive. There will also be a fairer and more effective complaints process, alongside better support for vets and nurses.

These long-overdue reforms will help ensure that whether you’re taking a dog for a check-up or, like me, booking Billy in for a visit, you can do so with confidence that they are getting the proper treatment and at a clear price.
