Chesterfield’s pubs are set to benefit from a major new package of government support, following announcements by the Treasury today on business rates reform, licensing changes and new funding for the hospitality sector.

The biggest commitment saw pubs promised a 15% reduction in this year’s business rates bill, followed by a two-year real-terms freeze. A government review into how hotels are valued for business rates will also take place. Around three-quarters of pubs nationally are expected to see their bills fall or stay the same.

The measures come after it was revealed that the previous government had budgeted to end all the relief that had been in place since COVID and means that the average pub will save around £1,650 in 2026/27, compared to the previous government’s plans.

Town MP, Toby Perkins, said, “I welcome the measures announced today and the Government’s recognition of the vital role pubs play in bringing communities together, providing local jobs and boosting our economy. I have had meetings with local landlords and owners to discuss the concerns about the cumulative impact of recent policy changes. I had written to the Chancellor regarding these concerns, and I am glad that the Government has taken these on board and is taking positive action to relieve the financial pressure on pubs.”

The government has also announced a new High Streets Strategy, aimed at helping retail, leisure and hospitality businesses thrive, alongside £10 million over three years for a Hospitality Support Fund. This funding will help pubs expand community services such as cafés, meeting spaces and family-friendly facilities.

Licensing reforms will also allow pubs to open later for major sporting and cultural events, boosting footfall and takings. The announcement will also cover music venues, providing a boost to these businesses and local artists.

Mr Perkins said: “These changes are about backing local businesses, protecting jobs, and celebrating pubs. I recently wrote to all pubs in Chesterfield to ask for their views on recent policies and what the sector needs. I will be writing to them again to gauge their views on today’s announcement, but also to listen to any other concerns.

I don’t deny that many publicans still face a challenging year even with these welcome changes, and know how much Chesterfield folk value their local boozer. My message to them is please support your local where you can, because if they go, they’re gone for good.”
