Chesterfield MP, Toby Perkins, used a recent visit to Nationwide’s town branch to welcome assurances that their town centre branch will be remaining on the high street.Toby visited the branch this week to meet with staff and discuss the challenges facing customers due to the cost-of-living crisis.Toby said, “I am delighted that Nationwide have committed to keeping their branch in the town centre for the foreseeable future. We have seen the loss of too many of our bank branches over the last few years, which is bad for customers and local businesses, but of particular concern for many older customers who do not use Internet banking.”On his visit to the branch, Toby discussed the bank’s concerns about the an increase in identity fraud and scams, which Nationwide are trying to alert people to via awareness campaigns. Nationwide has 15,000 members in the Chesterfield constituency. Staff at the bank try to be aware of customers who are potentially vulnerable due to the cost-of-living crisis or isolation, so they can provide them with extra support to them.

Toby added, “From speaking to the staff at Nationwide, they clearly  have a sense of community and understand how important their service is to local people. They have already seen more customers visiting them following the closure of other bank branches and I suspect many people will look to swap their accounts to banks that are supporting their communities and remaining open”.
